What is a Lion Cub?

This is an exciting new program offered by the Boy Scouts of America. Beginning in the Fall of 2018 it is an official program of BSA after being a pilot program for the past several years. Pack 595 has offered the Lions program since its inception.

The Lions program introduces scouting to kindergarten age boys and their adult partners. The activities are rooted in the fundamental goals of scouting including personal fitness, love of country and caring for others. The program helps youth build self-confidence, try new things, have fun together and strengthen family ties.

Family is an important part of the Lion’s program and all scouts participate along with an adult partner. Usually this is a parent, but any significant adult in the youth’s life might participate – grandparent, other relatives or even a close friend. Adult partners must be over 18 years of age.

Boy Scouts of America wants Lions and their families to:

Have Fun Together, Know One Another, Grow Together, Get Along Together and Discover Together

Lion advancements consist of 5 Requirements and 7 electives. In each theme, the lion cub completes a den activity, a family activity and (in most cases) a special requirement. These are listed in this leader guide and in each scout’s handbook.

The Requirements:

1. Lion's Honor (Becoming a Scout)

2. Fun on the Run (Fitness and Health)

3. Animal Kingdom (Patriotism and Stewardship)

4. Mountain Lion (Buddy System and 6 Essentials, Respecting Nature)

5. King of the Jungle (Good Citizen, Being a Leader, Flag Ceremony)

Electives:

1. I'll Do it Myself (Taking care of yourself)

2. Pick my Path (Decision Making, Bring a Friend, Responding with Emotion)

3. Gizmos and Gadgets (Properties of Motion and Force)

4. On your Mark (Games and Obstacle Course)

5. Build It Up and Knock it Down (Character Choices)

6. Rumble in the Jungle (Sportsmanship and Physical Activity)

7. Ready Set Grow (Gardening)

Special Activities:

Lions also participate in specific activities. They are not required for the Lion badge. These are:

Lions love to race (Build and race a Pinewood Derby Car or Rain Gutter Regatta Boat)

Lions love to travel (Take 2 trips with the Den or Pack)

Lions can camp (Participate in Pack Camping or an Outdoor Council/District Activity)

Lions are eligible to attend 1 week of Day Camp at Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation.

Completing all 5 Requirements results in presentation of the Lion Cub Award.
